Comfort Zones
‘When you go out of your comfort zone and it works, there’s nothing more satisfying.’
-Kristen Wiig-
I have been musing on comfort and comfortable things over the last few days.
comfort (noun) :
1 a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint
2 the easing or alleviation of a person’s feelings of grief or distress
3 a warm quilt (US dialect)
comfortable (adjective) :
1 providing physical ease and relaxation
2 as large as is needed or wanted
What struck me most is that the very meaning of the word is centred around ease, minimising pain (essentially seeking the reduction or removal of any hard or challenging feelings). It is also interesting to note that one of the meanings includes being l.a.r.g.e. - as large as is needed…..or wanted. That is pure hedonism!!
Now that landed differently. What does it actually mean to make something as large as is needed? What is large for me may not be large for the next person. How do I quantify large. What does being large, as large as I need or want look like? Can I measure it? Should I measure it?
Of course, the answer to these questions is not singular. There are often multiple answers and that can be scary.
Comfort is not always a good thing. We are not stagnant beings and we are essentially living matter. We as humans living in a human experience require change in order to grow.
